Russian Academy of Arts, Moscow – August 4–October 9, 2011
Tsereteli Art Gallery

Nelson Shanks is only the second living American painter to earn an invite to exhibit at two famed
Russian art landmarks. Featuring nearly 50 paintings by Shanks, the exhibit debuted at the Russian
Museum in St. Petersburg on June 2, 2011 and ran through July 20, before moving to the Russian
Academy of Arts in Moscow on September 16. The exhibit presented a cross-section of Shanks’ work,
drawing from private, public and personal collections. Though Shanks is known for his portraits
of celebrities such as Princess Diana, Pope John Paul II and famed cellist Mstislav Rostropovich,
this exhibition also contained unnamed subjects, still life paintings and allegorical scenes. Shanks
also taught master classes in collaboration with Russian Academy of Arts President Zurab Tsereteli.
